3.6.1 Local production at the CWP FactoryThe Hydrologic headquarters is located w ithin the IDE offices in Phnom Penh, and the CWP factory is 54 km north of the capital (Lopes 2012). The factory employs about 42 people23, including potters, kiln workers, product testers, a factory supervisor and security staff: the factory is run by local staff and uses local materials. Wages range from 61-120 USD monthly, w ith potters earning on the low-end of the scale at the same m onthly wage as garm ent factory workers (Sarat 2012)+. However, the Hydrologic potters unanim ously agreed that w orking at the w ater filter factory was preferable to working at the garm ent district because the Hydrologic factory is positioned near the village, w hereas the garm ent factory is an industrial region w ith a long com m ute on a packed factory bus. At Hydrologic, w orkers are able to go hom e to spend time w ith their children during the long m idday school break from 11:30 am-2 pm. W orkers also appreciate that the w orkspace is well ventilated and open (half indoors, half outdoors) and there are options for overtime com pensation which pays 1.5X of regular wages (Sarat 2012).
