Before removal of the nasoendotracheal tube the nasal packing and Kirschner wire in the glabella area should be removed. If a throat was inserted this should now be removed and any gastric accumulation of fluid and blood should be removed via a gastric tube. The patient is now placed in light intermaxillary fixation or class 2 traction by means of orthodontic elastics. Since most postoperative swelling will be located peripherally a postoperative tracheostomy is not required in most cases.
