Information “Information is power,” and in traditional organizations that often means individuals hold on to information that could be used to improve results instead of sharing it with the individuals who could use it to make improvements. In an HIO, a variety of information (production statistics, sales, expenses, profits, customer feedback, and so on) is disseminated so that everyone can use it to direct their efforts toward improving results.Knowledge Increasing the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) available in the organization enhances the ability of all employees to contribute to bottom-line success. Providing training and development opportunities increases the organization’s capability for making decisions and taking actions that improve operating effectiveness.Rewards Tying pay to performance compensates employees according to the level of effort they expend to accomplish their goals and objectives and contribute to organizational success. When employees know that their contributions will be recognized, they’re encouraged to go “above and beyond” normal job requirements. These rewards can be based on individual or team contributions and are discussed in more detail in Chapter 6, “Compensation and Benefits.”
