Now, there’s something else you may have noticed about Durer’s and Leonardo’s figures in contrast to Botticelli’s and Ingres’s. Both the Durer and Leonardo are studies on proportion. The figures, like the one we’ve been drawing, are in static positions, straight forward, everything lining up horizontal and vertical. It makes sense. It brings out the measure of each section or limb. But we don’t generally stand like this. Try it. It’s much more relaxing to put the weight on one foot like the Primavera and the couple in the Ingres. We call this contrapposto. Now the shoulders, which had lined- up horizontally line-up on a diagonal, same with the hips, the knees, and the ankles.
