4.2.3.2.2 Where the bar code label is required but cannot be applied directly to the part then specify a bag/tag method as per 4.2.3.1 so the supplier can attach the adhesive bar code label to the bag or tag.4.2.3.3 If a bag/tag method was necessary to accommodate all the required markings then also require markings directly on the part with some other marking method where it is practical to do so. Below are listed markings in priority order. Attempt to accommodate as many as possible directly on the part:4.3 Precautions4.3.1 Permanency and legibility:The marking method selected shall be consistent with the normal life expectancy of the item. The designated method shall be capable of withstanding the functional environment and cleaning processes that it will be exposed to except where paper tags or bags are required.4.3.2 Deleterious effect:The marking method and location selected shall not adversely affect the part; that is, bearing surfaces, mating surfaces, vacuum applications, particulates, etc.4.3.3 Location:Marking location shall be of sufficient space for the marking (See Table 1 for recommended minimum areas). Select a location so that the marking is not removed via a subsequent operation such as machining. The location selected shall not violate the cosmetic requirements or harm functionality for the next assembly.4.3.4 Cost Impact:The marking method selected shall meet the requirements of this procedure at the least cost. Specify multiple methods whenever practical.
