The role of the teacher is probably the most tenuous aspect of 21st century education. The skills that have been identified as essential require a more student-centered pedagogy with an emphasis placed on creating learning environments where students are confronted with problems that they must research in order to move forward.Teachers act as guides and facilitators as well as being able to understand when they must provide direct instruction if students are having difficulty with concepts.Yet,the current standardized assessments require teachers to cover the content necessary to do well on the tests. That leaves little time for creative and lengthy lessons.
