This standard covers electroplated coatings of zinc with following passivation for the corrosionprotection of threaded and non-threaded articles of iron and steel.Zinc electroplating involves immersion of the items to be coated in a solution containingzinc ions and applying an electric current to uniformly coat the surface. Zinc electroplatedcoatings are bright coatings that are thinner than hot dip galvanized coatings (see AC-STD6769 K). Passivation processes are applied to improve component life. The standard covers surface coatings with a maximum hexavalent chromiumconcentration value of 0,1% by weight in homogeneous*' materials. Hexavalentchromium may not be added intentionally. The standard does not, however, cover coatings on semi-finished articles such as sheet, strip, wire, tube and other profiles. Neither does the standard cover springs or articles which arecoated for other reasons than protection against corrosion.
