Although open source software is in its infancy in HR, there are already open-source user groups working on the development of HRIS, performance management, payroll, and other HR functions. The advantages of open source software will grow as this user base expands. Although the source code is free, implementing an open source system is not free because there are costs associated with customizing, installing, and maintaining it. As one might expect, consulting organizations are available (for a fee) to help companies install their free software.System implementation Several methods are available for storing information about employees. The traditional method /was to develop individual files and store them in file cabinets. In recent years, however, computerized data files have replaced file cabinets because they can store more information in less space, and the data can be quickly retrieved and updated. Many companies use small, networked computers; however, there is a trend to use an Internet system that integrates the HRIS with payroll, benefits, vacation, and other employee information. Internet systems allow geographically diverse companies to have a common data file that is immediately available throughout the corporation, even in distant international divisions.
