Green book, as a hot film in 2019, has won three Oscars in succession, and has been widely praised. All my friends who have seen the film around me give it a high appraisal. But in my opinion, the green book is a satirical and racist movie.
The movie mainly tells the story of Tony, a white gangster who has no stable job, as a driver, following sherry, a black pianist, to the south for eight consecutive weeks. The main purpose of the film is to show the deep-rooted racial discrimination and the friendship between black and white people of different social classes in America in the last century.
Although the friendship between Shirley and Tony that transcends prejudice and supports each other in the movie is moving, the atmosphere created by the whole movie makes me feel very uncomfortable. Shirley, as a black, rejects things related to black people, and actively learns the high etiquette of white people. He is only willing to hire white drivers, only willing to associate with white people, and not willing to talk with black people at the bottom of the social class, not willing to eat fried chicken that black people like to eat. He was alone and cut off from his brother and wife. On Christmas night, he could only find his white driver for company. Imagine if Shirley is Asian, and he doesn't want to associate with his Asian compatriots, conflict with Asian food and disgust with Asian culture, will we still sympathize with him and enjoy the movie? I'm afraid that only white people would like to watch this kind of film that extols white people's tolerance.
