This is a solid and enjoyable performance of B4, even if it's not the most inspired performance available. Anyone who would be learning this symphony from this performance would be in good hands. That said, there are other performances that bring out even more in this magnificent symphony. The sense of mystery is absent in Blomstedt’s reading, which adds such an important element to Karajan’s tremendous BPO/DG performance from his box set. And Blomstedt again seems to miss out on some elements of the spirituality that I hear in other performances (Karajan’s in particular, and Celibidache’s). Yet much goes right here, and the orchestra plays with real commitment. The B4 field is crowded with more than a few A-level performances from Karajan (BPO/DG), Chailly, Celibidache, Skrowaczewski, and others. That I don’t rank this at that level shows no disrespect to Blomstedt’s substantial achievements here.
