Similar considerations apply to David’s instructions to Solomon that he should find a way to kill Shimei ben Gera. Shimei was a member of the house of Saul who had cursed David during Absalom’s revolt (2 Sam 16:5–14), but he received David’s forgiveness after David’s victory (2 Sam 19:16–23). Afterward, Shimei showed no overt signs of disloyalty. Why then should David advise Solomon to kill him in violation of David’s oath to spare his life?
