It is important to note that the AT connecting rod is the only gas engine connecting rod to be fully machined. The connecting rods, like the crankshaft, are made from a low alloy forged steel and are also fully machined to remove stress raisers. The small end of the connecting rod is of the double-width design, where the bottom of the pin bore end is larger than the top. This corresponds, and is opposite to, the pin bore in the piston. This is done so that the loading of the power stroke is on a larger bearing area than the inertial loads of the piston. This results in lower unit loading and longer bearing life.
