The FE analysis revealed that the behaviour of the foundation resembles that of a cantilever beam, where the silt and sandstone layers of the rock react like semi-rigid spring supports (Fig. 4(a)). As intended, the barrettes prevent slippage of the layers and induce in each of them an action and reaction clamping normal force. As a groundwater table is not present and a drainage system will be installed, no water pressure was considered in the design calculations.
