When Melville met Nathaniel Hawthorne in Berkshire in the summer of 1850, his whaling book was almost finished. After meeting the old writer, Melville decided to move to a farm near Hawthorne. Melville said he felt that Hawthorne "sowed seeds of germination on my soul" and decisively revised his book from a simple adventure story about whaling to a more philosophical and moral work.<BR>
