This paper investigates and classifies English learning motivation of freshmen in non-English major universities of our University. It can be found that there are two main types of motivation: internal motivation and external motivation. The external motivation, which is mainly employment and textual research, has a great influence on students’ English learning, while the internal motivation of freshmen, such as internal interest, personal development and acquisition of information media, has a greater impact on students’ English learning. And there are tiny distinguish between the external motivation and the internal motivation. It is proved that the limitations of Deci and Ryan(1985)on motivation classification and the motivation of English learning in the future research direction are very complex. Besides, the content of the course, the teachers, and the students’ personal factors affect the learns’ English learning.Apart from the above conclusions the paper has showed, there are still some limitations in this study.Firstly, the sampling with 100 participants is limited, which might influence the reliability and validity of the questionnaire. Secondly, the results are not enough to summarize the differences in motivation types of all non-English major freshman. A more reasonable and in-depth explanation of the results of the report is to be provided by the reader. In addition, whether different motivation types will occur in the same English learner at the same time, the relationship between them, as well as the factors that affect these changes, will depend on future research.
