Everyone experiences spiritual needs and distress, and various attempts and systems have been developed to asses and measure this (Hodge, 2001). These involve systematic ways of looking at how people decide on the meaning and purpose of their life and their actions within it. Spiritual assessment also explores whether people are able to transcend suffering and despair, building self-esteem and hope. It seeks to identify the beliefs that help individuals deal with problems in their lives, sometimes in particular focusing on religious beliefs.
