During a child’s first five years of life, parenting is critical for the development of important social and cognitive outcomes in children. The child’s first relationships are critical for the establishment of competences- cognitive, social-emotional, and self-regulatory skills – and as such, set the stage for lifelong adaptation and functioning. The interactions and experiences that children have in the home and family setting provide a framework for how the child will interpret his or her world and give meaning to cultural-framed events.
