There are at least three ways in which we communicate. These are, verbally, vocally, and visually – the three “Vs”. You might ask, what is the difference between verbal and vocal communication, are they not the same thing? Actually, there is a distinct difference between both forms of communication. The key difference is that verbal communication involves what is said, while vocal communication is concerned with how it is said (the tone of voice). Verbal communication relies on clear messages that convey what is actually meant to be delivered. This does6not include how the message is said, which is the purview of clear messages communication is therefore the voice (some may say tone) used to convey that message. This should be easily recognized when you reflect on the observation that “it is not what you say, but how you say it” that makes the difference in the meaning we often understand. Visual communication, involves the body language used to emphasize the message delivered. Body language is the unspoken signals that are sent during the communication process which are also noticed by the receiver. Some of these signals are actually unintended but the receiver to the final meaning that the receiver understood. Notice that in communication, all three forms actually work together to deliver complete message. Causes of communication failure Influential studies on communication demonstrate that 70% of the workplace mistakes are directly connected to poor communication. You may yourself recognize this in your own workplace where a misunderstood message has caused serious errors and consequences on the job. Why is that so?
