The formal study of calcium sulfate (gypsum) whiskers began in 1975, in order to increase the output of gypsum and eliminate the superfluous by-product . At that time, the inorganic reinforced fiber was mainly glass fiber. However, with the development of composite materials, more and more attention has been paid to the enhancement properties of excellent whiskers. Therefore, the development of calcium sulfate whiskers has begun, a lot of research work has also been done in shape control and its application in composite materials.
