1.7 Spanish in the present daySpanish has today become a world language with more than 350 million speakers,who are concentrated in Spain and the Americas , but who are also to be found in Africa and Asia . Approximate numbers of native speakers are shown in table 1.2.Not all of these speakers have Spanish as their first language , although a very large majority does . Some speakers in Spain , although native speakers , use it bilingually with another language , which is dominant . Perhaps four million speakers of spanish ( in Catalonia , Valencia and the Balearic Islands ) have Catalan as their dominant language , with possibly two million speakers in Galicia for whom Spanish is their second language . Likewise , an unknown proportion of the approximately 750,000 speakers of Basque have that language as their dominant one ( see map 1.6 ) .
