CM in Generic Product Platform and Specific Product Application ProjectsConfiguration Management is equally relevant for Customer projects as well as generic product development projects. Because of the long product life cycles, the product remains in operational service long after the project has been closed.Products developed by BT (e.g. trains, locomotives, bogies, propulsion or signaling systems and components) are rarely one-off items with short life-span. BT products are to a high extent subject to the authorization process, and in many cases also safety-relevant or safety-critical (where required, in line with EN 50129 [43]), requiring effective Configuration Management.In any project, regardless of generic design development or product customization, long-term product needs and organizational needs have to be considered to efficiently maintain all parts of the product, including the related system tests to achieve the authorization.For those products that are part of a platform or just being reused in many market areas, the importance of Configuration Management is even higher, e.g. as mistakes made during Requirements Management may have a serious impact on several projects, affecting many Customers in different market areas. Here, systematic Change Management is a key to successful product platforms [04].For effective Configuration Management, the following specific activities are required for Product or Platform Development under the responsibility of Product Management (also, see sections 5.1 - 5.5): CM Planning and Management:o Creation of Product CMP and SW CMP (where applicable). Configuration Identification and Baselineso CM Baseline ‘As-Standardized’ ((*) Target System of records are listed and shall be used where available.o Table 1) at the end of the Product Platform development;o Definition and planning of intermediate product-related CM Baselines aligned with product/platform strategy. Configuration Change Managemento Analysis and approval process of Change Requests for a generic product platform or a specific product application, affecting the entire technology or a product family only;o Feedback loop to and from customer projects. Configuration Status Accountingo Completion check for product-related CM Baselines (all changes identified incorporated). Configuration Verification and Auditso Configuration Process Audit during product concept study;o Functional Configuration Audit (FCA) during prototype development.
