Although it may seem contradictory to state that a written record of a verbal warning should be maintained, it isn’t. The verbal warning includes specific examples of the unacceptable performance or behavior and notice of the consequences if it doesn’t change: that is, further disciplinary action, up to and including termination. The written record of this conversation can be as simple as a contemporaneous note by the supervisor that describes the date and time of the warning, the name of the employee involved, what was discussed, and any agreements that were made about future changes in behavior or performance.
