AnemiaPregnancy can cause some women to become anemic, making them feel tired or short of breath and causing their skin to look pale. If a woman experiences these symptoms, she should have a blood test to determine if she is anemic. Although most women are prescribed a multivitamin with iron during pregnancy, they may need additional dietary iron. The following will help to increase the amount of iron absorbed from food: • Foods containing heme-iron (meat, poultry, and fish) are more readily absorbed than non-heme-iron sources such as grains and vegetables.• Combining meat with iron-rich vegetables (spinach, broccoli, and dark green leafy vegetables) will increase the iron absorption from vegetables.• Drink a glass of orange juice or other vitamin C–rich juice to boost iron absorption when eating foods that contain iron.• Cook tomato and meat sauces in iron pots and pans. The acid from the tomato sauce will leach iron from cookware and increase the iron content in the food.• Take iron supplements with food to avoid upsetting the stomach. Some women find that they need to increase fiber in the diet to counteract constipation that can result from iron supplements.
