The enigma of the basic DNA structure was solved and the race won. In 1962, the Noble Prize for Medicine and Physiology was awarded to Crick, Watson and Wilkins.Actually, Watson and Crick need not have worried about Pauling’s beating them to the DNA solution since Pauling did not consider this research a race; however, Pauling does believe there was a chance, had he seen the X-ray photography: “…that I would have thought of the Watson-Crick structure during the next few weeks….Nevertheless, I myself think that the chance is rather small that I would have thought of the double helix in 1952, before Watson and Crick made their great discovery.”
