Mannitol is manufactured via a catalytic hydrogenation process of the natural sugars glucose orfructose. This functional excipient is highly water soluble, non-hygroscopic, non-toxic and shows littlesensitivity to applied heat. Mannitol is generally recognized as safe, and this excipient is frequentlyused in the pharmaceutical manufacturing of solid dosage forms. Mannitol consists of highly porousparticles with a relatively large surface area. Incorporation of APIs with the mannitol creates a highlyporous powder mixture with improved water wettability and dissolution rate. Recent studies haveshown that incorporating mannitol in formulations via physical mixtures, melting techniques orkneading methods could increase the dissolution rate of the APIs significantly [55,56].
