SECTION 309 — REQUIREMENTS FOR GROUP M OCCUPANCIES<br>309.1Group M Occupancies Defined. Group M Occupancies shall include buildings, structures, or portions thereof, used for the display and sale of merchandise, and involving stocks of goods, wares or merchandise incidental to such purposes and accessible to the public. Mercantile occupancies shall include, but are not lim- ited to, the following:<br>1.Department stores.<br>2.Drug stores.<br>3.Markets.<br>4.Paint stores without bulk handling.<br>5.Shopping centers.<br>6.Sales rooms.<br>7.Wholesale and retail stores.<br>For occupancy separations, see Table 3-B.<br>309.2Construction, Height and Allowable Area.<br>309.2.1General. Buildings or parts of buildings classed in Group M Occupancy because of the use or character of the occu- pancy shall be limited to the types of construction set forth in Table 5-B and shall not exceed, in area or height, the limits specified in Sections 504, 505 and 506.<br>309.2.2Special provisions. Storage areas in connection with wholesale or retail sales shall be separated from the public area by a one-hour fire-resistive occupancy separation.<br>EXCEPTION: Occupancy separations need not be provided when any one of the following conditions exist:<br>1.The storage area does not exceed 1,000 square feet (93 m2),<br>2.The storage area is sprinklered and does not exceed 3,000 square feet (279 m2), or<br>3.The building is provided with an approved automatic sprinkler system throughout.<br>309.3Location on Property. For fire-resistive protection of exterior walls and openings, as determined by location on property, see Section 503.<br>309.4Access and Means of Egress Facilities. Means of egress shall be provided as specified in Chapter 10.<br>Access to, and egress from, buildings required to be accessible shall be provided as specified in Chapter 11.<br>309.5Light, Ventilation and Sanitation. In Group M Occupan- cies, light, ventilation and sanitation shall be as specified in Chap- ters 12 and 29.<br>309.6Shaft and Exit Enclosures. Exits shall be enclosed as spe- cified in Chapter 10.<br>Elevator shafts, vent shafts and other openings through floors shall be enclosed, and the enclosure shall be as specified in Section 711.<br>In buildings housing Group M Occupancies equipped with auto- matic sprinkler systems throughout, enclosures need not be pro- vided for escalators where the top of the escalator opening at each story is provided with a draft curtain and automatic fire sprinklers are installed around the perimeter of the opening within 2 feet (610 mm) of the draft curtain. The draft curtain shall enclose the perim- eter of the unenclosed opening and extend from the ceiling down- ward at least 12 inches (305 mm) on all sides. The spacing between sprinklers shall not exceed 6 feet (1829 mm).<br>309.7Sprinkler and Standpipe Systems. When required by other provisions of this code, automatic sprinkler systems and standpipes shall be installed as specified in Chapter 9.
