GIven the complexity of experience which Saville has de-scribed, it is respectful of the human mind for us to recognize that the simple reflex to understanding must be augmented by the special clarity which explanations may contribute. The complaint against explanation should be directed against the mistaken belief that explanations are enough or against the poor quality of many explana-tions——not against well-timed, illuminating ones. Perhaps it will be argued that explanation is just warmed over psychoanalytic interpre-tation. Indeed, it is. The realization that insight is central to psycho-logical change is one of Freud's major contributions, opening an entire century to the mysteries of the unconscious.
