In the United States, landslides mostly occur in mountainous areas, hilly areas and coastal areas. Landslides can be classified according to the movement mode and material types. According to the movement mode, landslides can be divided into five types: collapse, toppling, sliding (which can be divided into rotary sliding and translational sliding according to the shape of sliding surface and the resulting sliding mode), lateral spreading and flowing. According to the material types, it can be divided into rocks and soils, among which, soils can be further divided into coarse-grained soils and fine-grained soils. Then, the results of these two classification methods are combined and matched, in which the movement method is the main one, so as to obtain the specific names of landslides, such as rock collapse, soil collapse, mud flow and soil flow, and the specific classification is shown in the following table.
