For a practical example, in a suddenly decreasing wind just before a start, simply lengthening the pivot cord slightly softens rig tension and slightly powers up the sails (adds some upper sail camber), while maintaining overall rig balance. Conversely, in a suddenly increasing wind shortening the pivot cord depowers (flattens) upper sails and tensions the rig, again while maintaining rig balance. We recommend less experienced sailorsstick to base settingsinitially. Save this advanced adjustment until you have more experience reading sails and discerning performance, which does take time to learn.
