Box 6.1 More on exercise and well-being ...One interesting review of the research in this area looked at whether exercise was more beneficial if done in a natural environment rather than indoors (Thompson Coon et al 2011). The authors reported that exercising in a natural environment compared to indoors was associated with greater well-being (e.g. greater energy and feelings of engagement and revitalization, and decreases in tension and depression). This suggests that exercising outdoors rather than indoors may be the better option to improve well-being. The authors point out though that limited high quality evidence exists and there is a need for further research in the area. They suggest longer term trials are needed to fully understand the difference between indoor and outdoor exercise and their effects on mental and physical well-being.
