Moreover, more noble spirits such as braveness, enduring, sympathy and sacrificing emerged during the sublimation. Fighting against the dark force requires great courage , persistence and tolerance. Freud interpreted the relationship between "ideal self" and "guilt" in the sense that behavior which falls short of the ideal self may be punished by the superego through guilt. Lily's death reminded Snape of the“ideal self", who is warm, considerate, brave and righteous. Snape served Dumbledore for Lily and in honor of Lily trying to build up his ideal self under the guidance and influence of Lily. The two systems in Snape's ego, conscience and the ideal self was roused because of the death of Lily, and Lily is the woman who made Snape inextricably linked to Dumbledore and the world of justice.Snape's guilt after losing Lily also led to a complex atude of Snape toward Harry. His id hated Harry's father James Potter while his superego felt guilty because his reporting to Voldemort caused the tragedy of the Potters. Snape made struggling choices following his ego in reality and this will be discussed in the following chapter.
