Physical observations & odour for Solids Take about 1g to 2g of test sample and spread in a petri dish/watch glass. Observe color of test sample over black or white background. Foreign particles: Check for the presence of any foreign particles (Black particles, fibers, metal particles etc.) in the test sample over white or black background. Odour: Any characteristic odour of test sample immediately after opening the package. Physical observations & odour for Liquids: Test about 10ml of test sample in a suitable test tube or Nessler cylinder (unless otherwise specified). Visually observe the test sample in a clear transparent stoppered test tube under normal light. Observe the white particles and haziness against black background. Observe the black particles against white background to find out the black particles. Notice, any characteristic odour of the test sample. Observe settlement of any extraneous matter on standing.
