Membrane filtration is distinctly different from conventional filtration in its use of thin membranes to allow water to pass through while holding back nearly all other suspended and dissolved components contained in the water. The four primary styles of membrane filtration: Reverse Osmosis, Nanofiltration, Ultrafiltration and Microfiltration all become fouled from components contained with the water. Fouling is the main reason for the high cost of membrane filtration systems, not the manufacture of the system or system components themselves. Solving the issue of membrane fouling would have a significant and beneficial impact to these systems.
