An intraoral examination is performed to assess dental status, soft tissues including tongue and tongue base, malocclusions, and skeletal abnormalities. A lateral cephalometric head film and a preoperative PSG recording are mandatory to plan an MMA surgery. Surgery may also be planned using 3D imaging techniques like (cone beam) CT (see Video 8.6). Subsequently, virtual surgical planning can be conducted, which offers the surgeon valuable information on the anticipated skeletal, air- way, and facial aesthetic changes (Fig. 8.87).360 Finally, fiberoptic nasopharyngoscopy awake or during drug- induced sleep is also recommended before surgery. This can further help to identify nasal, RP or tongue base pathology that may affect the outcome of the MMA surgery.
