A retrospective study of 462 mothers investigated the effects of workplace lactation programs that included (1) a class on the benefits of breastfeeding, (2) services of a certified lactation consultant, and (3) a private room in the workplace with equipment for pumping, on breastfeeding duration; this study found that breastfeeding was initiated by 97.5 percent of mothers, with 57.8 percent of them continuing for at least 6 months (Ortiz, McGilligan, & Kelly, 2004).
