particular motifs in the rock art repertoire, as has been shown forthe distribution of the “decorated” incurved sickle boat motif fromUpper Egypt into Nubia, with the occurrence of the motif observedto diminish significantly in the latter region (Hardtke, in press). At alocal level, while the evidence for past activities in the vicinity of arock art site are no guarantee of their association, it should beincluded as positive evidence contributing towards a multidimensional consideration of cultural association and chronology.Such is the case at Hierakonpolis where the location of rock artseems related to the distribution of archaeological areas, withspecific concentrations close to the HK6 and HK 11 funerary andsettlement localities (Hardtke, 2012; refer Fig. 1).
