The friction ratio of tangential rotors in Banbury mixers at Goodyear is 1: 1.125 This friction ratio allows a good incorporation of the raw material ingredients, namely the polymer bales and slab stock sheets and provides and assures a good shearing act0ion to the mixture. Frictioning is causing shearing of the mixture in he rotor gap which is necessary during the mixing process to optimise breakdown, deforming, preheating and homogenising of a compound Goodyear has 3 or 4 mixers in North America which run at even rotor speeds. However, this is not recommended. Intermeshing rotors do require even speeds ! Tangential rotors can’t be replaced by intermeshing rotors in BB270 mixer types. The C/L to C/L of the rotors are different ( I.e. wider with the intermeshing system ). The gear box would also have to be changed because it wouldn’t match up with an intermeshing mixer.
