The alternating arrangement of the narrative tenses of the above episode is typical and repeated throughout the entire story. What clearly comes out in Sassi Nam Juno Gi is the orderliness of the temporal frame of the narrative. There are problems,to be sure, when we come to the total structure of the story but not in the episodic segments. In any event, time is firmly there as the structural control of the progression of events. (The digressive tendency often observable in many pre-modern tales is not conspicuous in the old Korean genre, but we may assume for the purpose of possible generalization that the structure we are considering here is rather that of an episodic segment than that of the totality of narrative parts in a story.)
