FGF21 has been broadly studied for its diverse biological and physiological activities unveiling its therapeutic prospects in the management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, arthritis and cardiovascular diseases among others. The immunoregulatory and anti-inflammatory properties intrinsic to FGF21 have warranted a large number of pre-clinical and clinical studies validating FGF21 as a prospective drug target for treating chronic diseases (Table 1). With the current upsurge in the prevalence of chronic diseases, the therapeutic efect of FGF21 on chronic diseases is of great importance that needs the attention of the scientifc community. However, with the escalating prevalence of multiple chronic conditions, there is the possibility of multiple chronic diseases at the same time. Research is therefore needed to assess the therapeutic role of FGF21 under such conditions.
