In regard to the time dimension controlling and structuring narration, there is not much difference in the old and new forms of narrative: The past is the dominant temporality as a whole. But qualitatively, there is a radical discontinuity. It is this discontinuity that makes for a period of readjustment during which the present becomes the dominant narrative tense in fictional writing.
