These discrepant patterns of brain activity (i.e. differential effects within visual vs. auditory cortices) may stem from paradigmatic differences, including whether or not subjects must explicitly discriminate the context in which a given stimulus had been paired. Another alternative is that the activation of auditory regions in response to visual stimuli during memory-related tasks is a hallmark of performance impairments rather than redintegration per se.
