3.9 Case 5: The Ugastove Family and Impact CarbonThe Im proved Cookstoves for Social Impact in U gandan Communities (Ugastove) program is a Gold Standard voluntary carbon offset project is based in Kampala. The late Haji Kawere and his family developed the Ugastove brand in partnership w ith the Urban Com m unity D evelopm ent Association of Kampala, U ganda (UCODEA) and w ith support from JP M organ ClimateCare in 2005. Prior to building the Ugastove, the Kawere family m anufactured other, less efficient, stove models; stove m anufacturing has been the family business for multiple generations (Kawere 2014). While the complete num ber of Ugastoves in circulation is unknow n, over 300,000 units have been distributed since accreditation began in 2007, and the project has generated upw ards of 1.3 million carbon offsets (Black 2015)
