“Besides the window, I dress up my hair. In front of a mirror, I rouge my face.” It was beautiful picture of Mulan’s makeup to the mirror before the blind date in the film “Mulan” produced by Disney in 2020. Nevertheless, when the makeup trial in movie clips of Yifei LIU, who played the role of Mulan, was exposed, it aroused controversy. While some people complained about its ugliness, others deemed that it restored the makeup in that dynasty. Hence, I searched a large amount of murals of that era and literature and attempted at presenting the actual makeups at that time. I divided them into several kinds and found their common characteristics. Tracing the makeup types on paper, I studied their background stories, culture and thoughts. Ultimately, I designed some Mulan makeups with modern elements. Via continuous testing and AI drawing, I dropped them on my face with projector, combining them with light.
