The impressive effects of concentration were overshadowed by a widespread belief in what was spuriously identified as the power of the present. The here-and-now orientation does not by itself assure high quality concentration. Many people have poor powers of concentration even though they may be immersed in their current concerns. Depressed persons, for example, are little concerned with the future and only mistily concerned with the past. It is their concentration. not their calendar, which is flawed. Nor do people with good concentration stay focused on the present. Obviously, their interests may range to events which happen in any place or any time.
