Harley’s situation was quite different from his older brother’s. He had never been away from home; he had been trapped under the wing of his protective, older sister while living under the assumption that he would soon be off to nearby Bucknell College to study divinity and become a preacher, at the behest of his mother.15 It was not Harley’s father who wished him to become a “man of the cloth,” it was his mother, and because of his tremendous respect for her, he might have actually followed through with her wishes. Dr. Arnold was still hoping for one West Point appointment. As for Bucknell, there is little doubt that Harley would have enjoyed this small Baptist college no more than he enjoyed living in Ardmore.
