In writ- ten documents these fords are alternatively called crossing places (vadum seu transitus) and ports (vadum seu portus85), which suggests that during floods persons and goods were transported across the river by ferries. At times of low water, however, one could easily cross over these watercourses on foot at a dry and stony place (per portum siccum et saxosum).Stony fords ( vadus lapideus, kövecses rév) developed either naturally due to the accumulation of river drift, or were created by the placement of heaps of stone or large rocks at river shallows.<br>
