The importance of the managerial competencies of Developing Others, Teamwork and Directiveness was intriguing, since none of the jobs included in this sample involved formal managerial responsibilities (studies of nurse supervisors were excluded, for instance). In a sense, teachers, nurses, and counselors do "manage" their students or patientsThe Achievement and Action cluster is observed less frequently for human service professionals than for many other types of work. Our sense is that in this case it is because these competencies are not greatly used rather than because they are threshold requirements.
