Bee had many suitors. In fact, at the time of this meeting, Bee was engaged. In the next few years, while attending school in Berlin, affluent foreigners— German, Italian, Swiss—continually pursued her hand in marriage. One German youth named Billy kept in touch with her even after her marriage to Harley.46 Italians begged her hand while she was on vacations. It was no wonder that Harley’s attempts at courtship were brushed aside as innocent. Even after the Arnolds’ 1909 Christmas party, Bee recalled that there was virtually no courtship with Harley.47 During 1910 and 1911, however, it was Bee, not Harley, who was out of touch while schooling in Germany. There is no record of correspondence between the couple until nearly a year after Bee had returned from Europe, and Arnold had been assigned to flight training at College Park Field, Maryland.
