Liquefied natural gas is a cryogenic fluid that is cooled to the point that it condenses into a liquid. Liquefied gas is the liquid form of natural gas substances that would be gas at atmospheric pressure and temperature. The temperature at which liquefaction occurs is approximately 160°C or 260°F at atmospheric pressure. Liquefaction of natural gas reduces the volume of the gas approximately 600 times, making it more economical to transport. The shrinkage rate of LNG is actually closer to 610 times, but 600 is more commonly quoted. For example, 600 ft3 of methane gas will shrink down to almost 1 ft3 of clean LNG.
