The x-ray tube gets rid of the high-voltage cable and rotates continuously on the "slip ring" in the rack, with the bed moving at a constant speed (in and out) within the frame. The selected layer of thick "quasi-straight" rays (fan beams) form a spiral scan trajectory on the patient's body, and the information collected by the spiral scan is reconstructed by a computer into a layered image. The single-layer spiral CT appeared in the mid-1980s and was largely discontinued at the end of the last century.
